March 19 celebrates the life of Joseph, Mary’s husband and earthly father to Jesus Christ. While it is not a holy day of obligation for Catholics in the United States, it is still important to celebrate Saint Joseph and his role in Jesus’ life. Joseph was married to Mary, Jesus’ mother. He traveled with Mary to Bethlehem, raised Jesus as his own son, teaching him his trade of carpentry.
We celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. St. Patrick, the Patron saint of Ireland, brought Christianity to Ireland. It is believed he was born in Roman Britain (what is now Britain under Roman rule) to a deacon father. He was kidnapped at 16 and made a slave to Gaelic Ireland for six years and found God in this time. He escaped back home, became a priest, returned to Ireland with Christianity.

Ash Wednesday is Wednesday February 26, 2020 this year to start off the Lenten season. Lent is a 40-day season of fasting, repentance and reflection before Easter. We will attend Mass at Saint Dominic as a school, and reflect on Christ’s life during Lent, focusing on His own ultimate triumph over temptation. Lent ends with the celebration of Easter, marking Jesus’ resurrection.
Dedicating fifty years to a career is impressive. But committing fifty years to Catholic education is an achievement worthy of special recognition. St. Monica teacher Mrs. Sarah Avitalle was honored this past Friday during a Mass celebrating teachers who have reached milestones in their careers. Mrs. Avitalle began teaching in Philadelphia 50 years ago at the age of 18.
Starting on one career path doesn’t always mean you won’t veer off into a new path all together. Two teachers at Bishop McDevitt High School, Dr. Dorothy Burdziak and Michael Newns, can attest to this. Both started out with different career paths, but found themselves drawn to teaching...
